India · West Coast
Susegad afternoons, Portuguese-era churches and a coastline that changes character every ten kilometres — from the quiet north of Ashwem to the buzz of Baga.
Overview
Goa is two holidays wearing one name. North of the Baga river you get beach clubs, flea markets and a nightlife that runs late; south of Colva it slows to empty sand, fishing villages and resorts that face nothing but sea. We normally split a first trip across both so you get the contrast without the compromise.
Beyond the coast, the Western Ghats hinterland is genuinely underrated — Dudhsagar Falls in spate, spice plantations near Ponda, and the Latin Quarter in Panjim, which is best walked at 8am before the heat arrives.
Popular attractions
The Latin Quarter — ochre-and-blue Portuguese houses, best on foot early morning.
A four-tier waterfall in the Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary; spectacular just after the monsoon.
UNESCO-listed baroque church in Old Goa, holding the relics of St Francis Xavier.
The south's crescent beaches — calm water, beach huts, no jet skis.
Wednesdays only. Go for the textiles, stay for the sunset at Curlies.
Laterite ramparts with the best free views on the north coast.
