Designing for Indian daylight

Most interior lighting advice is written for latitudes that never get this much sun. Here, the discipline is subtraction — and the tools are depth, texture and shade.

A north-European interior is designed to catch every available photon. Rooms are pale, ceilings are white, windows are as large as structure permits. Reproduce that logic at 19°N and you get a room that is unusable between eleven and four.

The Indian problem is the opposite one: not scarcity but excess, and excess of a particularly hard kind. Overhead sun produces short shadows, high contrast and a flattening glare that makes even good materials look cheap. Everything we do to a plan in the first weeks is, in one way or another, about softening that.

The single most effective move is also the oldest: give every opening a brow. A 600mm reveal costs almost nothing at construction stage and permanently changes the character of the light entering the room, converting a hard beam into a graded wash across the reveal itself.

It also gives you something to look at. A deep reveal in lime plaster reads as a gradient from bright to shadow, and that gradient is the most beautiful thing in many of the rooms we have built.

A window is not a hole. It is a thickness, and the thickness is where the design happens.

Texture as a diffuser

Flat paint under hard light looks like flat paint. A hand-burnished lime render under the same light has a shallow relief that catches the beam and breaks it up, so the wall reads as luminous rather than lit. This is why we specify lime, textured plaster and unfilled stone in rooms with strong western exposure, and smooth surfaces only where the light is already gentle.

Then, and only then, fittings

We do not place a single artificial fitting until the daylight study is finished. Artificial light finishes what the sun leaves undone — the corner that stays dark in July, the counter that loses its light at four, the stair that needs a mark at night. Designed in that order, most rooms need about a third of the fittings that a standard scheme would propose.
