Design concept

One room, one table

We wanted a studio with no private offices and no meeting-room hierarchy. The floor is a single volume interrupted only by a service core, and the centre of it is an 18-metre table where every person in the practice works.

The building was a 1990s office shell. We removed the suspended ceiling and the raised floor, exposed the soffit, and left the services visible but ordered — everything runs parallel to the structural grid or perpendicular to it, never diagonally.

The only enclosed rooms are three acoustically sealed booths in blackened steel and glass, set free of the walls so the perimeter daylight is never blocked.

12mm acoustic felt on all soffit rafts and booth linings.

Architecture

Decisions in plan and section

Soffit

Suspended ceiling removed across 12,400 sq ft, gaining 640mm of height and the full window head.

Core

Services pulled into one central spine so the perimeter is continuous glass on three sides.

Booths

Three freestanding steel-and-glass rooms, 48dB rated, structurally independent of the shell.

Meeting tables and dark chairs in the workspace
Grey and white circulation corridor filled with daylight

Interior

Decisions you can touch

The table

18 metres of 60mm solid oak in six sections, seating 34, with power dropped from above rather than run underneath.

Library

A 9-metre material library on the north wall, sample trays on full-extension runners.

Acoustics

Reverberation brought to 0.6s with felt rafts and a heavy curtain that closes the presentation end.
